Organic Initiative for a Sustanable Caribbean

pineapple farmNidhi Tandon is originally from East Africa, and is Founder and Director of Networked Intelligence for Development, a Toronto based network of independent development consultants.

Nidhi works on local grassroots issues, in the context of globalization and increasing disparities between peoples and nationas. Recently she has been specialising in digital media, information and communication technologies and applications that enhance women’s livelihoods in developing countries. She designs and runs grassroots training workshops for women’s organizations, small business and farmer communities in East and West Africa and in the Caribbean, enabling women to organize and articulate their priorities around sustainable development. Much of her work revolves around the relationships between women and water, energy, natural resources and policy decisions. She has recently published critical articles on climate change and its impact on water, and on the negative implications of biofuel monoculture on women's land use options.

In Toronto, Nidhi is a Board Director of Ontario Nature, a provincial organisation that protects and preserves wild lands and species, and chaired the international film festival that takes place here each year - Planet in Focus. She is also a founding member of a Farmer's Cooperative in her local neighbourhood which brings local organic farmers in direct contact with the buyers from May to October.

In the Caribbean, Nidhi has been working steadily with her close friend and colleague, Dorienne Rowan-Campbell - an organic coffee farmer in Jamaica - to run regional training workshops for women farmers in the region. Since 2004, four workshops have been run - reaching out to over 130 women (and a few men) in 15 countries, including Guyana and Suriname. Markus has been an important resource for these workshops too (thank you Markus)!

"I am a networker, I believe in people working together for change, I can secure funds and supporters for our work, and I have a good strong shoulder to push against the wheel of progress!".
